It is internationally renowned centre of research in Materials Science and Technology. Department fosters interdisciplinary teaching and research in the field of materials science and technology. School has got seven sanctioned core-faculty positions. In addition, a large number of faculty members from sister departments/ schools are actively involved in the teaching and research activities of the School.

Q1. What is materials engineering?

Materials Science is the underlying science of high performance materials including metals, ceramics, plastics, composites, nano-materials, electronic materials and bio-materials. It is the science of developing high performance materials, engineering new applications, customizing innovative processing techniques and predicting performance. From the exquisitely delicate strength of a spider’s web to the astonishing structural forms of ancient towering Wollemi pines, nature has evolved the very best materials for every natural application.

Q2. Why material science and metallurgy are separate branch in IIT-BHU while all other IIT’s having them in combined form?

We give more importance to research in our institute and study it as a different interdisciplinary field.Also both fields are quite different.A metallurgist deals with metal extraction and refining from ore etc. Material science is a holistic view on all types of materials (metals, ceramics and polymers) dealing more with their properties to learn what makes a material better? Extraction and refining of ores is not dealt with in material science.

Q3. Why materials science is not considered a main branch similar to Metallurgy despite having a very good scope & placement?

Not many people know about the scope of Materials science or what is going on or what is the future prospective of this branch. That’s why we are sharing all details to help you make an educated decision.

Q6. Materials science career prospects?

Materials scientists and engineers work in materials process engineering, research and development, quality, technical support, management, technical sales and marketing, and more. Employers range from primary material producers and refiners to utility providers, the transport industry, the defense force, universities, research institutions and multinational technical consultancy firms.

There are a multitude of opportunities for scientific and commercial endeavor in the areas of forensics, bio-materials, electronic devices, nano-materials, the environment as well as new and innovative materials and processes.

Q7. Are there opportunities for innovation as well as work in established industries?

Graduates move around the world into research and development in materials engineering and other multidisciplinary groups using their investigative and engineering skills to create solutions and products many of us have not yet dreamed of. Even within well established industries as the drive for sustainable process and materials increases it is Materials Engineers who have the skills and knowledge necessary to transform these industries.
